Description

This 2008 campaign was the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s fifth Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign to the Southern Oceans to defend whales from the Japanese whaling fleet. The campaign had been named Operation Musashi in reference to the legendary Japanese strategist, Miyamoto Musashi, known as a great Samurai warrior, strategist, and tactician. Operation Musashi saved 305 whales from an agonizing death from the deadly explosive harpoons of the Japanese whaling fleet. The whalers took home only 2% of their whale fin quota and 72% of their Minke whale quota with an estimated loss of profits in the tens of millions of dollars. The Japanese Fisheries Agency blamed the failure to reach their quota on disruptions by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
