On April 20, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana, the British Petroleum (BP) Deepwater Horizon semi-submersible mobile offshore drilling unit exploded, killing 11 people. This disaster resulted in the largest offshore spill in history. Sea Shepherd volunteers were in the gulf rescuing and protecting wildlife, studying and reporting on contaminated areas and conducting reconnaissance surveys by air and sea across the affected areas.
