In October 2018, Sea Shepherd crew returned to Central America to protect sea turtle eggs, hatchlings, and nesting mothers from illegal poaching. Our crew patrolled nightly along the beaches of Padre Ramos, Nicaragua protecting Olive Ridley and other sea turtle species.
Despite multiple attacks from poachers, our volunteers spent three months on the ground in Nicaragua protecting sea turtles. In total they rescued 44 nests and saved 3906 eggs. To date 1769 baby hatchlings have made their way safely to the ocean, this number continues to rise as the remaining nests incubate safely in the hatchery.
Operation Jairo is planned to return in 2019 with the hopes of saving thousands of sea turtles this year.
