Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Antigua Sea Turtle Project (ASTP) partnered up for Operation Jairo Caribbean, a 3-week campaign to protect and monitor endangered sea turtles nesting on the shores of Barbuda. The team of researchers and Sea Shepherd crew conducted night and day patrols along 11 miles of beach, collecting critical data and safeguarding nesting Hawksbill, Green, and Leatherback sea turtles.
Over 60 nests were documented and 12 mothers were safely guarded as they lay their eggs. The group also recorded hatchling success rates while standing by to ensure the newborn turtles made it safely into the ocean. Only one out of a thousand sea turtles will survive to adulthood, so it is critical that each hatchling is given the best opportunity to make it to the water!
