Sea Shepherd was founded in 1977 by Captain Paul Watson in Vancouver, Canada, with the mission to protect and preserve all types of marine life.
Originally founded under the name Earthforce Society, the group's first mission was to sail to the Gulf of St. Lawrence in eastern Canada with the newly acquired ship, Sea Shepherd, to stop the annual slaughter of baby harp seals. Later that year, Captain Watson chased down the notorious pirate whaling ship Sierra and rammed it into a Portuguese port, ending his notorious scourge of the seas and strengthening Sea Shepherd's call for direct action tactics to stop poachers.
Formally established in 1981 as the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, the movement now has units in over twenty countries, a fleet of ten ships known as the Neptune's Navy, and thousands of passionate volunteers working together in direct campaigns around the world.
With the unwavering support of generous supporters, Sea Shepherd celebrated 40 years of marine conservation in 2017 with a record 25 campaigns in just one year.
The illustrated book takes the reader on the journey of the 40 year history of Sea Shepherd.
