M/V Farley Mowat, named in honor of the Canadian writer, environmentalist and former Sea Shepherd International Chair, served as Sea Shepherd’s flagship from 1997 to 2008. The Canadian government seized the Farley Mowat during the 2008 seal defense campaign, shortly before it was set to retire. In 2015, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society acquired two decommissioned U.S. Coast Guard Patrol Vessels, renaming one of the two, the M/V Farley Mowat. Its most recent campaign is Operation Milagro IV, in the Sea of Cortez, where it is currently protecting the critically endangered Vaquita.
